Raging Snowstorm Heading for the Midwest

omgNAM AND GFS HAVE BEEN STICKING TO THEIR GUNS WITH RUN-TOTAL SNOWFALL
IN THE RANGE OF 20+ INCHES IN PARTS OF NW OK AND ADJACENT KS/TX -
WHICH IS HARD TO BELIEVE AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR MUCH LESS THE
FIRST WEEK OF SPRING. 00Z NAM HAS DOUBLE-DIGIT TOTALS INTO EXTREME
NW OK BY MID-EVENING FRIDAY… 15-20 INCHES INTO HARPER COUNTY BY
09Z SAT… AND AGAIN DUMPS AN EXTRAORDINARY 30+ INCHES IN SW KS.
THIS RUN-TO-RUN AND MODEL-TO-MODEL CONSISTENCY IS LEADING TO
INCREASING CONCERN THAT THIS SNOW EVENT WILL BE ONE FOR THE
AGES… AND THAT WE NEED TO RAMP IT UP FURTHER WITH WHAT AMOUNTS
TO A “PDS” WINTER STORM WATCH. UPDATED WSW WILL TREND THAT WAY
AND SHOULD BE OUT BY 10 PM. STRONG WINDS AND RELATED BLOWING/DRIFTING
EASILY COULD MAKE THIS ONE OF THE MOST CRIPPLING S-PLAINS
SNOWSTORMS IN RECENT HISTORY… ALTHOUGH CURRENT INDICATIONS ARE
THAT WIND SPEEDS ARE UNLIKELY TO ATTAIN BLIZZARD CRITERIA. ALL
USERS ARE URGED TO TAKE THIS DEVELOPING SITUATION SERIOUSLY AND
PREPARE AS WELL AS POSSIBLE FOR WHAT MAY END UP BEING ESSENTIALLY
AN UNPRECEDENTED LATE-SEASON HEAVY SNOW EVENT IN NW OK.

If you are wondering what a “PDS” is….it stands for particularly dangerous situtation. This is usually issued in the Plains states ahead of tornado outbreaks. I cannot recall this being issued with winter storms. So this may be one for the ages. One model has parts of Kansas pushing 40 inches of snow! What about the Midwest? I have a forecast snowfall total for Milwaukee of 7.2 inches and I could also see Chicago receiving a good 2 to 4 inches of snow, especially north and west of the city. The heavy snow will move in by late Saturday afternoon and night. THIS WILL ALSO BRING THE LAFAYETTE VIEWING AREA ITS FIRST MEASURABLE SNOW IN MANY AREAS SINCE FEBRUARY. MAKE SURE TO TUNE IN TONIGHT FOR THE LATEST!!

Earth Hour is Upon Us

3259590137_3560ac298eDear WebTurds:

From melting glaciers to increasingly intense weather patterns, we know that climate change is already impacting life on our planet. On Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 pm, me and my family will take part in Earth Hour – the world’s largest global climate change event.

I know that the kids will be mad with out tv, radio, internet and xbox…but its something that I want to say I was a part of. It might sound painful, but it’ll be fun.

By simply turning out all non-essential lighting for one hour at our company buildings and in our own homes, we will join tens of millions of concerned citizens throughout the world in calling for action to save our planet for future generations. We’d like to invite you, our valued business partner, to join us in the important effort.

Earth Hour is an event led by the World Wildlife Fund. In 2008, more than 50 million people in 370 cities around the world took part, as the lights dimmed at Sydney’s Opera House, Rome’s Coliseum, the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge. Even the Google homepage went dark for the day.

Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and costs nothing. To get more information and to sign to have your business listed as among those participating, visit www.earthhour.org and agree to turn out all nonessential lights from 8:30-9:30 pm on March 28, 2009.

We hope you’ll join us in this important and inspiring effort and encourage your employees, customers and suppliers to take part. Don’t forget – on March 28th at 8:30 pm, switch off.

One simple hour that will help make the world a better place!

GameturdJust a quick heads up that a new webturd related site just launched called Game Turd.

Anyway, the blog is based on video games and different types of gaming platforms such as Wii, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC Gaming and hand held gaming.

Go here to check it out: http://www.gameturd.com

Awesome Font Viewer Saves Time

FontsBeing a graphic designer,  I have thousands of different styles of fonts and type faces to choose from.  In photoshop or fireworks, it can get annoying scrolling through all the fonts and trying each out one at a time.

To make things easier, I did a quick search on “font viewer” and came by this one…which is pretty nice!  The best thing about it is that it not only shows all the fonts that you have installed on your machine, but it allows you to preview a typed phrase…what a time saver.

Font Viewer is a font viewer; it views fonts!

In the simplest of terms this is a program that allows you to view large portions of your installed font families with their various styles.

The application renders all installed font families in a scrollable grid view. It allows you to change the font size, color, background color and text to be displayed. It has a built in list feature that allows you to select fonts and then store the names, this acts much like a light-box on the various stock image websites. You can export your list to .txt or .fv for later use and we also added a feature that will export your list to .pdf with the all styles applied.

This tool is by no means revolutionary but as a designer you might find it quite helpful when trying to find that perfect font for a piece of copy or a new logo.

Well honestly what more can I say, just give it a try! If you are a designer I think you will find Font Viewer really helpful.

Go to Font Viewer.

Trying To Get Organized

Reconstruction_largeAs you may have noticed, I keep changing the look of my blog on a daily basis.

To explain, I am looking for nice template that has a few good points to it such as:

Overall Clean Look
Easy to Read
Has Space for Google Ads
Easy to Upate and Make New Posts

Anyway, I am kind of digging this new layout but there seems to be some issues with IE7 and wrapping text around images.  I’ll give it a go and try to work these issues out so that I can stick with the same look for a little while longer.

Its Spring Again

BizAlthough things are blooming and popping out of the the ground, it sure doesn’t feel like spring at 23 degrees this morning!

The phenological definition of spring relates to indicators, the blossoming of a range of plant species, and the activities of animals, or the special smell of soil that has reached the temperature for micro flora to flourish. The first swallow to arrive for the flowering of lilac may be the indicator of spring. It therefore varies according to the climate and according to the specific weather of a particular year.

So now, the song of the week: It’s Spring Again – Biz Markie

[Verse One]
Don’t you like when the winter’s gone
And all of a sudden it starts gettin warm
The trees and the grass start lookin fresh
And the sun and sky be lookin their best
Birds be singin, flowers be bloomin
A lot of brand new cars be zoomin
Fly girls lookin the best they can be
And the guys be dukey dukey Dan you see
Besides all that I like the warm weather
Cause that’s when you can get yourself together
But I like Easter time with a grin
Cause when I was little we used to go to Coney I-sland
We used to eat a lot of stuff like cotton candy
Cause back then, it was like fine and dandy
You used to get dressed up in double knits
And your plaid suit jackets, they were the shits
The good ol’ days, was back then
And the reason I reminisce, cause..

[Chorus: Biz sings - voice slowed down]
It’s spring again
Everybody know it’s spring again
To the girls and boys and people above
This is the time to fall in love

[Verse Two]
Now girls – have you ever broke up with your boyfriend
And you felt that the world was comin to an end
Sittin around the house poutin for no reason
Just because you thought your man was skeezin
For a couple of days, look gloomy and gray
Thinkin about the ol’ happy days
All of a sudden, the telephone ring
He beg for your forgiveness and you know what that brings
Joy and happiness into your life
Before you felt like your heart was stabbed by a knife
I’m tellin you g
