Time Coded Vinyl Update

Dj-stormtrooperHere is an update regarding the time coded vinyl, etc.

My stuff actually came in the next day.  It shipped from IL which is right next door to me and it only took a day to arrive.  The bad news is that they didn’t have the yellow time coded vinyl that I wanted but oh well, its the same thing…its…the…same…thing. (said in George Lopez voice)

Anyway, it probably took me a good 2 or more hours to get that stuff configured!  I was racking my brain and it just didn’t make sense on the mistakes I was making.

I researched the web for help and probably one of the best tutorials that I could find was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7QnVyXiP7g&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Ftop40-charts.com%2Fvideos%2Fplay.php%3Fvid%3DZ7QnVyXiP7g&feature=player_embedded

That part was actually a breeze as it recognized the time coded vinyl right away…well after I got the usb sound card hooked up correctly.

The hardest part was actually hearing the music or getting any kind of sound of of them.  On my screen, I could see music playing but nothing would come out of my speakers!

PEA0334~Peanuts-Never-Ever-EVER-Give-Up-PostersWhen I was playing regular vinyl records, I was using a rednecked wire that I made that went from rca to mini phone jack.  I just plugged that directly into my line in sound card and it worked perfectly…but it wouldn’t work with the time coded vinyl.

After about another hour of tons of trials and errors, I ended up coming right out of my mixer and into the back of my speaker system via rca…BAM…there’s the music!  I felt so stupid!

So now, I have my TCV’s working perfectly and I actually use my Wacom Cintiq 12wx as a mini monitor.  My turntable stand is actually close enough to my pc so I just drag my mouse over to help load songs…I gotta take a pic and upload it soon.

Here is a sketch of what I have going now.  What you see in red is my experiment for this weekend and I will fill you in on details with that soon.

DJ Brow is Going Digital

J0397476Well, I am going digital now on the turntables!  Although there are about 1000 records scattered all over my place, its just going to be easier to play around with mp3s.

I admit that it is cheating in a way with easier beat-matching, never having to search and buy records again, having doubles of any song that I want, etc.

So to make this happen, I took the plunge and bought the components that I need for hooking up to my pc.

With these, I will be able to simulate the record feel and still be able to scratch, etc.  For more info no time coded vinyl, see below. I had a few color choices like: red, blue, white, clear…but I had to go with my fav color…yellow.

This little fella will allow me to actually send the information to my computer and “download” mp3s right into the records.  The way that it works is that it has 4 ins and 4 outs for RCA cables.  I will have to plug my turntables into the ins and then come from the outs back into my mixer.  And then from the ASIO soundcard, I go directly into my computer via USB cable.

This all works together with some software that reads the records, mixer, etc and will allow me to replace old school vinyl with mp3s.

I ordered from a company located in IL last night so hopefully it will arrive just in time for the weekend.

Vinyl Emulation Information

timecoded vinylVinyl emulation normally uses vinyl records which are played on conventional turntables. The turntables’ audio output – the timecode recording – is routed into an analog-to-digital converter, or ADC. This ADC may be a multi-channel ASIO soundcard or a dedicated external USB or firewire audio interface box (usually distributed with the software). The ADC sends digital time code information to the software, which then translates the signal into corresponding changes in the playback speed and position of a digital audio file. The manipulated audio output of the program is then sent back through the ADC or the computer’s sound card, and into an audio mixer where it can be mixed like any other analog audio signal.

The result is digital audio playback that feels like it can be manipulated like a vinyl record. However, there is always a short delay between the needle’s reading of the time code and the software’s playback of the audio. This delay is usually between 8 and 30 milliseconds. The delay is treated as a figure of merit for vinyl emulation products. A shorter delay allows the DJ to have better response and control of the music.

Call of Duty 7 Vietnam

COD 7I have my fingers crossed on this one…only been dreaming about it for about 5 years or so.

Activision Blizzard is nothing if not forward thinking. While Modern Warfare 2 is still months away from release, rumors are already swirling about the next Call of Duty game after that, which would be the seventh in the series. According to a “a source we consider reliable,” That VideoGame Blog reports (via Destructoid) that Activision has been seeking to license Vietnam War-era music, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music — indicating the game could likely be set between the 60′s-80′s, taking place in any of the aforementioned settings.

Also passed on by this source is that World at War senior producer Noah Heller will be involved with the game, which means Treyarch would once again be at the helm. That VideoGame Blog notes that Heller has previously stated that “we’re happy that we put [World War II] to bed” in the last game, further indicating a change in setting for Treyarch’s next installment.

While a Call of Duty title set in the Vietnam War would be an obvious guess, the breadth of scope of the music being licensed seems to suggest Activison may be planning a broader scale — perhaps touching on a number of other proxy wars and conflicts that took place during the Cold War. The Bay of Pigs invasion? Cuban Missile Crisis? Afghan-Soviet War? The era sure seems to offer a lot of grist for Activision’s mill.

But as usual, this is just a rumor for now, and Activision responded to Destructoid’s request for comment with the usual “Activision doesn’t comment on rumor and speculation” reply. Besides, we still have Modern Warfare 2 to play through before we should even have to start speculating about Call of Duty 7, don’t we?

Indiana Beach Opens for 2009

Indiana_beachThis weekend is the opening of Indiana Beach and if the weather holds out we will be heading there for a few hours.  We only live like 10 minutes away from IB so its a quick and easy trip to please a waiting toddler.

Rumor has is that Dora and Diego will be out there this weekend and I know that my daughter would like to see that…and ride a few kiddie rides…and play some boardwalk games.

This year, the new owners of Indiana Beach called off general admission so it should be free to get in.  Not that it was a lot, but it did add up when you have a handful of kids with you.  Plus, this leaves extra cash left over for a greasy corndog or just a few more games of skee-ball.

Will hopefully post some Indiana Beach pics up after the weekend.  I will not have "access" to my camera from work. :(

UPDATE: I found an event list and more info online about this opening weekend’s events.

Celebrate Mexican food & fun for the whole family on our opening weekend with our Cinco de Mayo

Special appearances by Dora and her cousin Diego on Sunday in Kiddyland 1-4 p.m.

Enjoy local Hispanic bands playing throughout the park

Taco eating contests, piñata games, & radio celebrity hosted contests

Digital Fingerprinting in Kiddyland 12-4 p.m.

The 2009 Indiana Beach season begins Saturday with the Cinco de Mayo celebration. Hispanic food, dancing and music are part of the opening weekend. Digital fingerprinting for children, prizes and a taco-eating contest featuring the world famous tacos of the Taco Shoppe are all part of the festivities.

Additional special event weekends include, Mothers are Special Weekend, May 9-10; Armed Services Weekend, May 16-17; Outdoor Sports Festival Weekend, June 6-7; and Indiana Beach’s 84th Anniversary Weekend, June 20 -21.

Fireworks will return this summer as Indiana Beach ignites the sky with a fireworks display over Lake Shafer on May 23, July 4, Sept. 5 and every Friday and Saturday night from June 19 through Aug. 22.
