Rain Brings Indiana Flooding

Last night we got a pretty nasty storm here in Indiana…yeah, in the middle of January. There was around 4-5 inches of rain that fell and a handful of tornado watches and warnings. Yeah, I know…in the middle of January! Everytime that dang Emergency Alert System came on my stomach dropped to the floor.

I have seen the area where I live flooded before, but some are saying that is the worst in years. Nearby are two lakes, Lake Freeman and Lake Shafer, that are gushing out water from supporting dams at about 24,000 cubic feet per second and there was some scare that the dams wouldn’t be able to handle it. Locals around the area started to evacuate and take up shelter in hotels and Twin Lakes High School was rumored to house some people.

So far so good. There’s talk about more rain coming with accompanied by some thunder tonight but I don’t think that it will be enough to create any impact like the downpour we had last night. The bad thing that I see about this next movement is that it will be followed by a nasty cold front. It looks like this mess could turn into snow and possibly freeze the huge puddles.

On my lunch break, I manage to snap a few photos of the flood waters and you can view them here: http://www.webturd.com/flood/ until I move them into the PhotoBrow gallery. I wanted to get some shots of one of the dams but it was a little dangerous to get to it right now.

I am not ready for all this severe weather yet…its too early. I could go for one more snow dumping before the warmer season hits.
